Are headaches disrupting your life?
Many people struggle with headaches. Not only is it the pain and discomfort in the head, this condition can affect your daily life, effectiveness at work, and quality of your family and social time.
Recurrent headaches can leave you feeling drained and frustrated, not knowing what to do and who to see for help. You might be limiting or even avoiding your normal activities and reliant on pain medication to get through.
Headaches are among the most common neurological issues and a leading cause of disability worldwide. (Wilkes, Margot J., et al., 2021)
If you’re fed up of headaches controlling your day, you are not alone – and there is a better way forward.
Types of Headaches
The three most common headaches are:
- Tension Headache: Mild to moderate, dull pain that feels like a tight band or pressure around both sides of the head; often triggered by stress or muscle tension.
- Migraine: Moderate to severe throbbing or pulsating pain, usually on one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and sometimes visual disturbances.
- Cluster Headache: Severe, sharp pain around one eye, occurring in cycles or “clusters,” often with redness, tearing, or nasal congestion on the affected side.
Headaches are often associated with other symptoms including:
- Irritability
- Poor concentration
- Disrupted sleep
- Pain around or behind the eyes
- Neck tightness and stiffness
What causes headaches?
The majority of headaches that present to our clinic are cervicogenic in origin – which simple means from coming from the neck. A misalignment of a bone in the neck – a condition known as subluxation – is considered an injury. The body responds to this injury with inflammation of the nerve and spasms of the surrounding muscle. This can contribute to recurrent headaches by drive pain through the spinal cord, brain stem and brain.
Spinal subluxations (misalignments) can also contribute to headaches via:
- Postural compensations and imbalances leading to altered muscle tension
- Nerve pressure/irritation in the neck and upper back
- Glandular dysfunction due to altered nerve supply, leading to global hormonal disturbances
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction
